A few weeks of Round-Up to catch up on…

It’s been a busy few weeks, and obviously I am not quite yet in the habit of blogging regularly…working on it…anyways…

The Pre-K-ers

“Dressing myself” turned into “80’s style ice skater” this week.

The pre-schoolers are working daily on recognizing enough letters that we can re-start our Pre-K curriculum.

The 4 year old likes the games, but its going slowly…on the other hand…this week he really wanted to learn about how things decay, and whales. So he did.

He also claims his “writing hand” gets really tired, so he tried out alternate methods. It went about as well as you’d expect…

Venn Diagrams are the Bomb

IMG_8048 - CopyThe 7 year old really, really, really likes to make Venn Diagrams. Anytime he hears the words “compare and contrast”, he starts drawing circles.

He also got himself a little crystal growing kit, and sent another one to his dad in CA so they could grow them together…and “compare and contrast” how they grow in different climates. IMG_8049I see another Venn Diagram in our future…  For a $1 kit, it has worked rather well – this picture is after about 12 hours. It’s now almost a week old and covered in little crystals.

The Sound of Silence

The older kids have been plugging away at school and sports. Our only new item of business is the addition of an (online) sign language class for the 7 and 9 year old.  I wasn’t sure how it would go, but they are both loving it and catching on quickly. And…AND…they are using it as a “secret language” to talk to each other…SILENTLY…so it is a HUGE WIN for Mom, since its not quiet around here pretty much ever.

This is How We Feed Our Giants

The bulk of my non-school time has been taken up in food processing. We had a very tiny garden this year without the hubs around to work his garden magic (no surprises on who the successful gardener in my marriage is…it’s not me…)…but…we were blessed with several friends who shared their bounty with us!

We also spent two different mornings picking, picking, and picking apples and pears. We processed probably 400-500 pounds of produce over the past two weeks and have another 200 or so of apples sitting here for this week.

We made spaghetti sauce, dehydrated all kinds of things, canned applesauce, made fruit leather, and made apple pie filling. Fall has always been our food storage season, so it has felt GREAT – “normal”even – to get all that food put up.

Mom Needs Balance

The past few weeks I spent a few evenings holed up in my room making stuff. Sometimes life feels a little heavy, and I’m learning to recognize that when I feel overwhelmed and frustrated, 9 times out of 10 its because my life balance is out of whack. A little time with with some paper and glue for some “art therapy”, or a few hours of sewing while I listen to a podcast, and I’m in much better shape afterwards. Much more productive than eating cookies 😉

This month’s projects: finishing a Halloween quilt I started several months ago, a collage on a canvas, and sewing several shirts:

Alrighty folks, I think we are all caught up! Have an EXCELLENT week!
